If I were to be turned inside out and become the opposite of everything I am an actor would appear. That is probably the reason I find live theater an almost too intimate an experience to handle.
Watching a real person in an artificial environment trying to artificially inhabit emotions that are not their own was risking a public humiliation I was reluctant to witness. But when it works it is stunning craft to watch. When it works I laugh and cry as if I have experienced something real.

I was visiting a friend, a fellow artist in New York City who was living in the apartment of  his latest girlfriend. She was a believer in primal scream therapy and would lock herself in the bathroom everyday and cry like a baby. She sounded exactly like a baby. She had written a play about the source of her need to scream. She arranged chairs in one end of her small apartment and we watched her perform in the other end. One of many performances I was to eventually witness in the city.
